The Westminister Confession of Faith on Missions

Following are all the quotes I could find in the Westminister Confession of Faith and in the Larger Catechism concerning world missions. I have capitalized the phrases dealing with the global impact of the gospel, but kept them in their context. ~Rev. Nate Wilson

Chapter 1: Of the Holy Scripture

1:8 The Old Testament in Hebrew (which was the native language of the people of God of old), and the New Testament in Greek (which at the time of writing of it was most generally known to the nations), being immediately inspired by God, and by His singular care and providence kept pure in all ages, are therefore authentical; so as, in all controversies of religion, the Church is finally to appeal unto them. But, because these original tongues are not known to all the people of God, who have right unto, and interest in the Scriptures, and are commanded, in the fear of God, to read and search them, THEREFORE THEY ARE TO BE TRANSLATED INTO THE VULGAR LANGUAGE OF EVERY NATION UNTO WHICH THEY COME (1Co_14:6, 9, 11-12, 24, 27-28), that the Word of God dwelling plentifully in all, they may worship Him in an acceptable manner; and, through patience and comfort of the Scriptures, may have hope.

Chapter 7: Of God’s Covenant with Man

7:6 Under the gospel, when Christ, the substance, was exhibited, the ordinances in which this covenant is dispensed are THE PREACHING OF THE WORD, and the administration of the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper (MATTHEW_28:19, Mat_28:20; 1Co_11:23-25): which, though fewer in number, and administered with more simplicity, and less outward glory; yet, in them, it is HELD FORTH IN MORE FULNESS, EVIDENCE, AND SPIRITUAL EFFICACY (Jer_31:33, Jer_31:34; Heb_12:22-28), TO ALL NATIONS, BOTH JEWS AND GENTILES; and is called the New Testament. There are not therefore two covenants of grace, differing in substance, but one and the same, under various dispensations (Psa_32:1; Act_15:11; Rom_3:21-23; Rom_4:3, Rom_4:6, Rom_4:16, Rom_4:17, Rom_4:23, Rom_4:24; Gal_3:14, Gal_3:16; Heb_13:8).

*Chapter 15: Of Repentance

15:1 REPENTANCE UNTO LIFE IS AN EVANGELICAL GRACE (Zec_12:10; Act_11:18), THE DOCTRINE WHEREOF IS TO BE PREACHED BY EVERY MINISTER OF THE GOSPEL, AS WELL AS THAT OF FAITH IN CHRIST (Mar_1:15; LUKE_24:47; ACTS_20:21).

Chapter 16: Of Good Works

16:1 Good works are only such as God hath commanded in His holy Word, and not such as, without the warrant thereof, are devised by men, out of blind zeal, or upon any pretence of good intention.

16:2 These GOOD WORKS, DONE IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S COMMANDMENTS, ARE THE FRUITS AND EVIDENCES OF A TRUE AND LIVELY FAITH (Jam_2:18, Jam_2:22): And By Them Believers Manifest Their thankfulness, strengthen their assurance, edify their brethren, ADORN THE PROFESSION OF THE GOSPEL (1Ti_6:1; Tit_2:5, TITUS_2:9-12), Stop The Mouths Of The Adversaries, AND GLORIFY GOD (JOHN_15:8; Phi_1:11; 1PETER_2:12), whose workmanship they are, created in Christ Jesus thereunto, that, having their fruit unto holiness, they may have the end, eternal life.

Chapter 25: Of the Church

25:2 THE VISIBLE CHURCH, WHICH IS ALSO CATHOLIC OR UNIVERSAL UNDER THE GOSPEL (NOT CONFINED TO ONE NATION AS BEFORE UNDER THE LAW), CONSISTS OF ALL THOSE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD THAT PROFESS THE TRUE RELIGION (PSALM_2:8; ROMANS_15:9-12; 1Co_1:2; 1Co_12:12, 1Co_12:13; REVELATION_7:9); and of their children (Gen_3:15; Gen_17:7; Eze_16:20, Eze_16:21; Act_2:39; Rom_11:16; 1Co_7:14): and is the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, the house and family of God, out of which there is no ordinary possibility of salvation (Act_2:47).

25:3 UNTO THIS CATHOLIC VISIBLE CHURCH CHRIST HATH GIVEN THE MINISTRY, ORACLES, AND ORDINANCES OF GOD, FOR THE GATHERING AND PERFECTING OF THE SAINTS, IN THIS LIFE, TO THE END OF THE WORLD: AND DOTH BY HIS OWN PRESENCE AND SPIRIT, ACCORDING TO HIS PROMISE, MAKE THEM EFFECTUAL THEREUNTO (Isa_59:21; MATTHEW_28:19-20; 1Co_12:23; Eph_4:11-13).

Question 53: How was Christ exalted in his ascension?

Answer: Christ was exalted in his ascension, in that having after his resurrection often appeared unto and conversed with his apostles, speaking to them of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God, and giving them COMMISSION TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO ALL NATIONS, forty days after his resurrection, he, in our nature, and as our head, triumphing over enemies, visibly went up into the highest heavens, there to receive gifts for men, to raise up our affections thither, and to prepare a place for us, where himself is, and shall continue till his second coming at the end of the world.

Question 191: What do we pray for in the second petition.?

Answer: In the second petition (which is, Thy kingdom come), acknowledging ourselves and all mankind to be by nature under the dominion of sin and Satan, we pray, that the kingdom of sin and Satan may be destroyed, THE GOSPEL PROPAGATED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, the Jews called, the fullness of the Gentiles brought in; the church furnished with all gospel officers and ordinances, purged from corruption, countenanced and maintained by the civil magistrate: that the ordinances of Christ may be purely dispensed, and made effectual to the converting of those that are yet in their sins, and the confirming, comforting, and building up of those that are already converted: that Christ would rule in our hearts here, and hasten the time of his second coming, and our reigning with him forever: and that he would be pleased so to exercise the kingdom of his power in all the world, as may best conduce to these ends.
