7585 = Hebrew: sheol, underworld, grave, hell, pit, the OT designation for the abode of the dead, TWOT Number: 2303c (Brown, Driver, and Briggs’ Hebrew Lexicon) KJV w. Strong’s numbers lists 63 instances of “Sheol” in O.T. – all listed above. This is a broader word than the English word for “Hell,” including both the afterlife of blessing and of punishment.

1067 = Greek: Hell is the place of the future punishment call “Gehenna” or “Gehenna of fire”. This was originally the valley (Hebrew “Geh”) of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth and dead animals of the city were cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the wicked and their future destruction. (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon) 12 instances of this word in KJV w. strong’s numbers; all are listed above, and Jesus uses it consistently to speak not of a trash incinerator but of a place of everlasting torment for the wicked.

86 = Greek: hadēs, name of the god of the lower regions, the nether world, the realm of the dead, later use of this word: the grave, death, hell (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon) 11 instances of this word in KJV w. strong’s numbers; all are listed above, including the I Cor 15 passage where earlier Greek manuscripts (used by ASV & ESV) have “death” and later manuscripts (used by KJV) have “hades.” This is a broad word like the Hebrew “sheol” describing the place of both the righteous and the wicked.

5020 = Greek: Tartarus: the name of the subterranean region, doleful and dark, regarded by the ancient Greeks as the abode of the wicked dead, where they suffer punishment for their evil deeds; it answers to Gehenna of the Jews (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon) Only occurrence in the Bible (2Pet).

Clearly the Bible speaks of the dead having consciousness even while apart from their body and having the ability to feel torment or happiness, and that this state of torment or happiness begins immediately upon death. There appears to be a change of status at the end of time where the dead will be reunited with their bodies and set into a more permanent state of torment or happiness.

There are two more words used frequently in Hebrew poetry for death and hell while generally meaning a hole in the ground or a water well in the History books of the Old Testament:
